Lactulose is a laxative used to relieve constipation by drawing water into the intestines, making stools softer and easier to pass. It is also used in hepatic encephalopathy to help reduce blood ammonia levels and improve bowel elimination.
Lactulose belongs to a group of medicines called laxatives. It helps relieve constipation by increasing water within the intestines, which softens the stool and makes bowel movements easier.
It may be used in adults, adolescents, children, and infants according to the recommended age-based dosing.
Lactulose is also used in hepatic encephalopathy, a condition associated with severe liver disease, where it helps reduce blood ammonia levels. The dose in this condition is adjusted according to response until 2–3 stools are produced daily.
